Finding the Cheapest Replacement Window Installation

There are really only two ways to replacing windows and not many replacement window businesses offer the option of full or add-frame when you begin window shopping. If your home has an existing window that is not going to be replaced, it's best to try to find an add-frame option at the very least, if not full frame. Not all window replacement businesses use the same techniques when it comes to attaching the window frame and you should ask the replacement company how they attach the windows.

Many replacement window businesses will use a jamb kit when replacing windows. This is a special kit, usually made of aluminum, that holds the window frame in place when it is being installed. Many times the jamb will also be used when installing the sash, but it will be used more for support than for installation. The advantage of the jamb kit over a standard installation is the ease of China WDMA.

Adding a jamb after installing the replacement window is a relatively simple operation. When the old window is removed from the wall it usually comes with a jamb kit or if not, it can be purchased separately. Many people do not want the hassle of removing the old windows to add a jamb to the wall. If this is the case, simply take out the old window frame and the sash and unscrew the holding nuts and bolts. You can then pull the frame off the stud and set it aside, taking care not to damage the wall underneath.

If your replacement windows are to be attached to the exterior of the home, there are two main types of installation: one is using double-hung or sliding windows and the other is using single-pane or double-paned glass. Double-hinged or sliding windows require a professional installation because of the specialized hardware needed to attach them. These windows were made in an open "box" shape. The opening in the top is on the single panes of glass and the two panes are secured in place by two or three exterior brackets "staked in" to the exterior wall. In order to have a successful install, it is recommended that these windows are installed by professionals because of the specialized hardware needed.

Single-pane or double-paned glass replacement windows can be easily installed on your own. This type of replacement window requires no special tools or equipment. All it takes is the proper measurements, which are determined by the manufacturer of your replacement window. Then you simply need to measure and cut the new opening in the top (the portion of the frame that touches the exterior sill). You'll then need to measure and cut a matching strip along the exterior sill to properly mount the new frame. Most sash windows and sash casings are designed to use a single-pane casing and a single-pane window usually just needs the replacement frame and sash casing to be mounted on a single exterior sill.

Replacement wood window. This type of replacement is the most expensive because the wood used has to be the right size for the replacement window. This also means that the wood has to be cured properly in order to provide strength to the window. Plus, there are often special treatments applied to the wood to make it resistant to weather, insects and heat. It is the most difficult to install because it usually requires professional skill and the most expensive to purchase.

New construction windows. This type of replacement is the easiest to install and most popular. There are many styles of new construction windows including tilt and turn, split panes, and herringbone panels. New construction windows can be used for sashes as well as casings. To keep the price down, if you want windows but not sashes or casings, you can often find companies that sell complete replacement systems complete with sashes, frames, and all necessary hardware.

The cheapest way to replace windows is to use new siding and window frames along with new windows. When buying siding for your replacement window installation, be sure you buy framing that matches or is similar to what you currently have. Some companies will even match the wood you already have in your house so that you don't have to buy more wood or have a custom built window frame. You will save money by only buying the parts you need, which are often cheaper than purchasing all new windows and siding.
